The phone scammers are making the rounds again in Hall County, and again are using the name of the sheriff's office as part of the con.
Hall County Sheriff's Office Community Service Unit Officers have received three notices this week about such calls.
As with previous times, the scammers use the actual names of sheriff's deputies who work in the department and "spoof" the caller ID so that it shows "Hall County Sheriff's Office" on the victim's phone even though the call isn't from the agency.
There are numerous variants, according to a Facebook posting by the sheriff's office, but all of them involve making a payment to avoid arrest. "Legitimate law enforcement officers don’t make calls like this," the posting concludes.
