Newtown Florist Club to give update on progress of community policing efforts

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Public Policy Committee of Gainesville's Newtown Florist Club is holding a follow-up meeting Monday, Oct. 12 to its summer open-air conversations about community policing.

Where Do We Go From Here? A Community Report Back Conversation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Participants can join via Zoom call or Facebook live.

The activist group at that time made more than a dozen recommendations to improve relationships between law enforcement and the minority community in Gainesville and Hall County. According to an announcement on the group's Facebook page, Monday's event will assess the progress made since the summer.

"In response to the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and the impact of their deaths on the black and brown communities: the NFC Public Policy Committee proposed fourteen (14) recommendations to Gainesville-Hall County Criminal Justice officials, for policy reforms or changes to law enforcement practices" reads a statement on social media. "During this conversation the Committee will review and discuss the progress made to date on those recommendations, as we work together to improve law enforcement community relations."

To participate via Zoom, citizens must register by 12 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12. For more information, call 770-718-1343 or email [email protected].
