An 18-year-old college student from Loganville in Gwinnett County is back home after spending more than a month behind bars in the Cayman Islands for violating the country's COVID-19 quarantine rules.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Skylar Mack's return in a Monday morning article. She reportedly arrived at Atlanta's Hartsfield Jackson International Airport on Friday, January 15.
Mack, a pre-med student at Mercer University, was arrested after she traveled to the Cayman Islands in November to watch her boyfriend compete in a jet ski competition, an event that had been rescheduled from an earlier date. Mack was supposed to remain in quarantine for 14 days after her arrival in the country, but authorities said she removed a tracking bracelet and attended the competition.
The boyfriend, Vanjae Ramgeet, 24, was also charged.
Mack and Ramgeet initially were sentenced to community service time and a $2,600 fine, but an appeals judge decided later to impose a stricter sentence. The judge's four-month jail sentence was reduced on appeal.
