Alpharetta man dies after fall from Yonah Mountain in White County

The White County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an Alpharetta man who reportedly fell from the top of Yonah Mountain on Sunday.

White County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Clay Hammond said the victim fell from the top/rock face side of the mountain.

The case is still open however he said no foul play is suspected at this time.

White County Coroner Ricky Barrett identified the victim as Srinath Ganguri, 33, of Alpharetta. 

The coroner said Ganguri had hiked the mountain with his wife. 

Around 6 p.m. Sunday, White County Fire Services and Emergency Management assisted in a search and rescue on Yonah Mountain, said spokesman Bryce Barrett. County fire, EMS, EMA personnel, and White County sheriff’s officers were dispatched to the scene.

Through mutual aid, Gainesville Fire Department also assisted.

The search lasted about 45 minutes and resulted in first responders locating the body.

After proper investigative measures took place, personnel from multiple agencies helped with the recovery.

 

Busy Sunday

The fatal incident on Yonah was one of three mountain-related incidents that required response from White County Fire Services on Sunday. 

At 1:30 p.m., White County Fire and EMS were dispatched to a medical-related call involving a hiker at Smithgall Woods State Park, Bryce Barrett said. The individual was located on a hiking trail and complained of difficulty in breathing. Within minutes first responders contacted that individual and the individual was escorted off the trail to an ambulance for further evaluation.

Later in the day, White County 9-1-1 Dispatch received a call from a person who was lost on Yonah Mountain. 

According to Barrett, the individual had lost sense of direction. The person was able to give dispatchers GPS coordinates before the call was disconnected. White County Fire, White County EMS, and Helen Fire were dispatched to the scene.

The individual was located safely within 45 minutes of the initial call.
