No injuries were reported after a second-story rooftop on the new tower at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville caught fire Saturday afternoon.
That building is under active construction.
The Gainesville Fire Department said crews responded at about 5:40 p.m. Saturday after a report of heavy smoke coming from the rooftop of the new construction area for the north tower expansion.
Crews found an active fire on construction debris which had spread across the entire second-floor rooftop.
The fire was controlled within 20 minutes of the arrival of fire crews. Crews remained on scene until 7:20 p.m. as they worked to clean up and assist with the initial investigation by the Fire Marshal.
"Moderate to heavy winds contributed to the fast spread of the fire among construction materials and debris," Chief Brandon Ellis said in a press release.
The Gainesville Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Ellis said construction crews had reportedly left the site for the day at about 4 p.m.
Additionally, Ellis said investigators do not believe the building suffered any structural damage.
No patients or hospital staff required evacuation due to the remote location of the fire.
