Volunteers needed for annual Gainesville Spring Cleaning event during Earth Week

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter
Officials with the City of Gainesville would love to have you and your community groups join them to clean up for Spring!

Gainesville Water Resources (DWR) and Gainesville Parks & Recreation is preparing to host their Annual Spring Cleaning & Beautification Event  between April 21-25, in celebration of Earth Week.

The event is geared toward streaming cleanup and park beautification efforts and is open to everyone wishing to volunteer from 9 a.m.-noon April 21, April 22, April 23, April 24 or April 25. Civic groups, schools and other area organizations. Participants may also request a different timeframe between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m – just make sure you’re setting aside two-three hours.

Water Conservation Specialist & Outreach Coordinator Kristen Watson, with Gainesville DWR says, "What used to be our annual fall cleanup has transformed into this beautiful collaboration with Gainesville Parks & Recreation that emphasizes the value of investing in our planet, our water and our community.  The volunteer activity choices range to encourage the participation of all age groups, so we are looking forward to seeing everyone that week as we clean up local streams and beautify Gainesville parks."

Officials add that groups may choose their own activity, whether it be collecting garbage/debris or removing weeds and/or ivy from a nearby stream, park or greenway. Event location options include Holly and Lanier Point parks, Midland and Rock Creek greenways, and preapproved neighborhoods. School groups may opt to clean their own campuses.

Watson also added that, "Individuals, businesses, organizations, corporations and civic groups in need of service hours are encouraged to volunteer."
