Investigation underway after fire damages Forsyth County storage units

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Authorities are investigating after a fire damaged dozens of self-storage units in Northeast Forsyth County Tuesday night.

Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said the fire happened just before 10:00 p.m. at Building G of CubeSmart Self Storage on Mini Trail off of Keith Bridge Road.

"We were dispatched to a reported structure fire in or around the self-storage area, and when we arrived on scene, that in fact is what we were faced with," Shivers said.

Shivers said 31 units were damaged, with some being damaged by the fire and others being damaged by water or forced entry by firefighters looking to fight the blaze. Shivers said most, if not all, of the units were in use at the time of the fire.

"All the things that you would expect were stored there," Shivers said. "Everything from antiques and appliances, to ATVs, to just the typical family household items...unfortunately, a lot of different units were heavily damaged, and those folks are learning today that they've lost a lot of items in that property."

Shivers said crews worked for five hours to extinguish the fire and clear the scene. He said investigators are now working to determine how it started.

"Our investigators were on scene last night, they've been back today working with the management company," Shivers said. "Each one of those units has to be treated as an individual investigation because while the business is owned by a company, every one of those units had valuables inside, each owned by someone else. Every individual that has rent or lease of that space has to be notified."

Shivers said anyone who is a renter of units in Building G of the facility is asked to contact CubeSmart's management company to aid the investigation.
