Work to shore up Tybee Island set for November

By The Associated Press
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is making preparations for the latest round of work aimed at shoring up the coastline of Tybee Island.

The Savannah Morning news reports the agency is looking for contractors to work on the project, set to begin in November. The contractors will dredge as much as 1.4 million cubic yards of sand from about a mile offshore and then pump it on the beach where bulldozers will spread it.

The federal government covers about 61 percent of the project, with the city paying the rest. Officials say the last effort six years ago cost nearly $10 million.

Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman says timing is key to make sure erosion doesn't accelerate, with the sand providing needed protection from storm surges.
