GDOL: Unemployment for July drops to 2.1% for Gainesville

More people were back at work in Gainesville and Hall County in July, according to Thursday's metro area employment report from the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL).

In Gainesville, the unemployment rate was down nine-tenths percentage points to 2.1% over the month; a year ago, the rate was 5.5%.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Gainesville saw the number of employed residents rise by almost 1,000 from June to July.  

"We are seeing positive labor market data across the state," Butler said. "The unemployment rate is down in every region, county, and metropolitan statistical area reflecting the strength of our state’s economy. Career opportunities remain high for job seekers as we continue to see rising jobs numbers in metro and rural areas throughout Georgia."

Butler outlined the following statistics in his monthly report:

  • The labor force increased in Gainesville by 15 and ended the month with 104,375. That number is up 4,678 when compared to July of 2020.
  • Gainesville finished the month with 102,188 employed residents. That number increased by 982 over the month and is up by 8,006 when compared to the same time a year ago.
  • Gainesville ended July with 94,100 jobs. That number increased by 100 from June to July and increased by 3,600 when compared to this time last year.
  • The number of unemployment claims went down by 48% in Gainesville in July. When compared to last July, claims were down by about 91%.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 1,755 active job postings in Gainesville for July.
